Richard is a 48-year-old man from Jamaica. He has experienced harassment and persecution from strangers, neighbors, classmates and family members who called him “fish or battyman” — the derogatory name for gay men used in Jamaica. He was victimized by homophobic police officers on multiple occasions and was even unlawfully jailed along with a group of gay men at a gay club. On another occasion, a party he attended was stormed by drunk men carrying machetes and hurling rocks at his gay friends. Richard was also forced to quit his job of ten years when a customer accused him of being gay. After receiving a number of disturbing calls by strangers who threatened him, and being attacked again and again, Richard fled to the United States.
