Muslim Ban Sparks Fear Among LGBTQ and HIV-positive Refugees and Immigrants; Chaos in U.S. and Abroad
New York, NY — Today, following a weekend of chaos and confusion among Customs and Border Patrol and fearful calls for help among the LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrant community, Immigration Equality Action Fund’s Executive Director Aaron C. Morris released the following statement:
“On Friday, President Trump issued an executive order instructing the Department of Homeland Security, among other things, to bar immigrants from seven largely Muslim countries from entering the United States. This order targeted refugees already cleared for resettlement, anyone with a valid visa, and individuals who had green cards. The sweeping, poorly constructed, and unconstitutional directive caused wide scale chaos at the border. Many immigrants have been barred from boarding their flights, some are being taken off of planes, and many are being detained at America’s airports. Immigration Equality received dozens of messages over the weekend from anxious LGBTQ and HIV-positive individuals asking if they would be allowed to return home.
“Saturday night, a judge in the Eastern District of New York stayed the President’s order. Several other districts courts around the country followed suit. Yesterday, the Secretary of Homeland Security declared in a written statement that allowing people with green cards to enter the U.S. was in the national interest, substantially backtracking on a central tenet of the executive order. The Administration’s reckless and haphazard attack on immigrants is a gross violation of due process and it substantially undermines our international reputation to uphold and protect basic human rights. This order will ban thousands of LGBTQ and HIV-positive people from seeking safety in the United States. We will not allow that to happen.”
Immigration Equality Action Fund is the nation’s leading LGBTQ immigrant rights organization. We advocate for LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants and families. Because we serve more LGBTQ immigrants than any other organization, we spot patterns and trends that no one else sees. We take that experience to Washington D.C. and fight to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community.
