Immigration Equality Statement on New Public Charge Rule

NEW YORK, NY — This weekend, DHS announced its intention to implement a radical reinterpretation of the public charge rules. In order to obtain a visa or to ask for a green card, most immigrants must first prove they are not likely to become public charges. Under the proposed new system, DHS will heavily favor the rich.  Immigration Equality’s Executive Director Aaron C. Morris issued the following statement:

“This wealth test is a blatant attack on working families, on children, and on anyone living with a serious health condition. It shows that the Trump administration believes the United States should be a country for the privileged at the expense of everyone else. We should not force immigrants to choose between their immigration future and life-saving benefits for their families.”

We will do everything we can to fight these proposed regulations. You can fight them too! We encourage everyone to submit comments in opposition to these changes as soon as the 60-day public comment period is announced.
