LGBT rights are human rights.
This Human Rights Day, we celebrate the United States’ asylum program. Through asylum, LGBT people who are fleeing persecution have the chance at a safe place to call home. When people are denied dignity and human rights in their country of origin, asylum offers them a shot at the American Dream.
Around the world, nearly 80 countries criminalize LGBT people. Even more are fundamentally unsafe for LGBT people and those living with HIV. That’s why every year, we answer more than 5,000 calls for help from people who want to live their lives free of fear.
Even with our sound legal advice, people fleeing abuse and violence are not guaranteed a lawyer in the immigration system. They are left fighting for themselves in a system that is stacked against them. Having an attorney increases a person’s chance of winning their asylum claim by 600%.
That’s why we’re honored to fight for every LGBT and HIV-positive immigrant to have access to justice.
This Human Rights Day, please give a gift to Immigration Equality to help us make sure every LGBT person fleeing persecution has a fair chance at a safe place to call home.
