Same-sex Binational Couples in the United States: A Demographic Overview*

There are an estimated 35,820 binational same-sex couples who reported to the most recent Census.

58% of same-sex binational couples who reported to the Census are male-male, averaging 40 years old, while 42% are female-female with an average age of 38.

Nearly 16,000 (or 47% of) binational couples reported to be raising children in the home.

*All data based on the 2000 Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS). This custom tabulation of the five percent PUMS, used for the same-sex couples accounted for it in our study, represents a one in four sample of approximately 20% of American households that completed a census long-form.
