Volunteers

Immigration Equality is always looking for volunteers to assist with various aspects of our work. Volunteers are needed to help with office work, to research country conditions information, to translate written materials, and to help with design work. If you are interested in one of these areas, or if you have other skills which you would like to contribute to Immigration Equality, please contact us. Please note, our offices are located in New York City and Washington, D.C., and open Monday-Friday 9:30-5:30, so we can only accept volunteer office assistance from individuals who can work in those locations during these hours. We do need translation help and other things that can be done off-site. If you have a specific skill or interest you would like to volunteer, please let us know with as much detail as possible in your e-mail and we will better be able to respond to you quickly.

Development Director - New York, NY

Overview

Immigration Equality, a national non-profit organization with offices in New York City and Washington, DC, is the leading organization dedicated to winning equal immigration rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and HIV-positive people. In 2009, the Immigration Equality Action Fund was created to expand federal legislative advocacy for LGBT and HIV+ immigrants and their families. Immigration Equality and Immigration Equality Action Fund seek a dynamic, motivated, and experienced individual to lead its successful development department.

The combined budget of Immigration Equality and the Action Fund is currently $1.4 million, which comes from private foundations (50%), individuals (40%), and law firms and corporations (10%). Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director is a new position that will supervise the Development Manager and work closely with senior staff and the Boards of Directors to grow and diversify all revenue streams, particularly corporate support. The Development Director will be a key player in the continued growth and expansion of the organizations, increasing the combined budget to $2 million over 18 months.

Responsibilities

The Development Director will be expected to:

  • Formulate and plan all long- and short-term development efforts in coordination with the Executive Director, senior staff, and the Boards to create and successfully meet the fundraising plan set forth in the annual budget
  • Prepare and control the departmental budget
  • Explore new funding opportunities with a particular focus on relationships formed through Immigration Equality’s Business Coalition for the Uniting American Families Act
  • Manage and expand the grant portfolio, developing, cultivating, and deepening institutional relationships
  • Grow revenue streams in all areas, including corporate gifts, event sponsorships, planned giving, and major gifts
  • Work closely with the Development Manager to support and expand an already robust individual giving program and to create annual work plans, financial goals, and reporting mechanisms to ensure progress toward financial goals and objectives
  • Maintain a limited personal portfolio of major donors for stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation
  • Expand fundraising opportunities nationally and internationally, with a particular focus on the West coast
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Boards of Directors to engage and empower current board members in fundraising efforts and to identify and support the recruitment of new board members
  • Oversee the maintenance of the fundraising schedules, objectives, databases and tracking systems for all segments of the development department, ensuring that appropriate systems and processes are in place for effective tracking, timely recognition, and appropriate communication with all supporters
  • Think and act creatively to maximize new technologies for fundraising

Desired Skill Set

  • Exceptional ability to guide and mentor Immigration Equality’s Executive and Development teams
  • The intellectual depth, professionalism, and interpersonal skills to work effectively and collaboratively with the organization’s sophisticated program teams in NY and Washington, DC
  • Knowledge about how development and finance interface in the absence of a finance department
  • Demonstrated success raising non-deductible gifts
  • Strong proficiency in current development technologies (experience with SalesForce is a plus)
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while being highly attentive to details in all aspects of work
  • Pragmatic, entrepreneurial outlook, creativity, and a sense of humor

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of senior-level fundraising experience that demonstrates success and increasing responsibility
  • Familiarity with the LGBT and immigration funding landscape, particularly regarding corporate support
  • Proven track record in building strong relationships with current and prospective donors
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and describe funding needs in a way that is compelling, comprehensive, and persuasive to current and potential donors
  • Demonstrated success in developing and managing budgets
  • Adept at crafting proposals, donor correspondence, and other kinds of materials and presentations for a variety of audiences

Office Manager - Washington, DC

Immigration Equality, a national non-profit organization with offices in New York City and Washington, DC, is the leading organization dedicated to winning equal immigration rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and HIV-positive people. In 2009, the Immigration Equality Action Fund was created to expand federal legislative advocacy for LGBT and HIV+ immigrants and their families. Immigration Equality and Immigration Equality Action Fund seek a dynamic, motivated individual with outstanding organization skills to build & support our growing office and expanding projects in Washington, DC.

The Office Manager will play a major role in planning our upcoming office move & other as-needed administrative projects, managing logistics for supporter and activist events, and bringing order and timely office services to the office. The position reports to the Operations Director in New York. This full-time position will have the following responsibilities:

Office Relocation

  • Assist in selection of new office location by visiting potential sites with a critical eye and a clear understanding of the organization’s needs
  • Plan and oversee all local aspects of the office move — renting movers, coordinating vendor services, organizing staff, minimizing work disruption, etc

Office Support

  • Anticipate supply & service needs & provide for or request them in a timely way
  • Serve as first line of service for technical questions: phones, printers, computers and networking
  • Organize and maintain the organization of the local server
  • Assist the Operations Director in solving DC-specific technical issues
  • Orient and instruct new employees and interns on office tools and policies
  • Assist staff with coding and reporting of expenses in a timely and accurate manner
  • Act as on-site expert in all matters of organizational administration
  • Manage relationships with local vendors
  • Additional tasks as needed

Logistics Management

  • Assist Development Manager with logistics for local fundraising events
  • Provide logistical oversight for Immigration Equality contingents at Pride and other rallies and public events; coordinate logistics for local and visiting supporters for Lobby Days.

Interns

Immigration Equality welcomes applications for internships from law students, graduate students, and college students. Although we cannot pay interns, we will complete any necessary paperwork to assist with school credit or outside funding. Resumes without detailed cover letters will not be considered. Please note, we generally accept two full-time law student interns for the summer and one or two other interns. We begin interviewing interns for summer positions in January so please submit your resume and detailed cover letter by the January preceding the summer you would like to intern.

Public Policy Intern

Immigration Equality is seeking a dynamic, committed individual for a fall, spring, and/or summer internship in our new Washington, DC office to work to promote equal immigration rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive communities.

The Immigration Equality Public Policy Intern carries out public policy research to help pass the Uniting American Families Act, a bill that would allow gay and lesbian Americans couples to sponsor their foreign-born permanent partners for immigration. The Public Policy Intern researches Congressional comprehensive immigration reform initiatives as well as LGBT initiatives to help develop effective strategies for winning rights for LGBT families. The Public Policy Intern also assists with background research to help develop and implement regulations beneficial to LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants, including in the areas of asylum and immigration detention. The Public Policy Intern writes outreach and educational materials to promote the rights of LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants. The Public Policy Intern may assist with developing grassroots activists in key Congressional districts.

The Public Policy Intern can help implement the strategies based on his or her research by attending lobby meetings on capitol hill, and assisting with briefings of members of Congress and their staff.
