Volunteers
Immigration Equality is always looking for volunteers to assist with various aspects of our work. Volunteers are needed to help with office work, to research country conditions information, to translate written materials, and to help with design work. If you are interested in one of these areas, or if you have other skills which you would like to contribute to Immigration Equality, please contact us. Please note, our offices are located in New York City and Washington, D.C., and open Monday-Friday 9:30-5:30, so we can only accept volunteer office assistance from individuals who can work in those locations during these hours. We do need translation help and other things that can be done off-site. If you have a specific skill or interest you would like to volunteer, please let us know with as much detail as possible in your e-mail and we will better be able to respond to you quickly.
Interns
Immigration Equality welcomes applications for internships from law students, graduate students, and college students. Although we cannot pay interns, we will complete any necessary paperwork to assist with school credit or outside funding. To apply for an internship, please send a detailed cover letter describing your interest in our organization and resume to internships (at) immigrationequality (dot) org. Resumes without detailed cover letters will not be considered. Please note, we generally accept two full-time law student interns for the summer and one or two other interns. We cannot accept law interns for the fall 2009 semester. We begin interviewing interns for summer positions in January so please submit your resume and detailed cover letter by the January preceding the summer you would like to intern.
Communications Intern
Immigration Equality is seeking a communications intern for its Washington, D.C. office.
As part of a small communications team, the communications intern will play a key role in Immigration Equality’s media, outreach and other communications initiatives. This hands-on internship offers an opportunity to work directly with members of the media; mobilize grassroots spokespeople; spearhead the organization’s e-communications work; and be part of an array of writing, editing and branding assignments.
The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communications skills, and be able to work with key constituencies, including the media and Immigration Equality spokespeople. Candidates should be well-organized, able to work independently and familiar with Microsoft Office suite of software. Experience in graphic design programs or web programming is a plus, as are Spanish language skills (though not required).

Public Policy Intern
Immigration Equality is seeking a dynamic, committed individual for a fall, spring, and/or summer internship in our new Washington, DC office to work to promote equal immigration rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive communities.
The Immigration Equality Public Policy Intern carries out public policy research to help pass the Uniting American Families Act, a bill that would allow gay and lesbian Americans couples to sponsor their foreign-born permanent partners for immigration. The Public Policy Intern researches Congressional comprehensive immigration reform initiatives as well as LGBT initiatives to help develop effective strategies for winning rights for LGBT families. The Public Policy Intern also assists with background research to help develop and implement regulations beneficial to LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants, including in the areas of asylum and immigration detention. The Public Policy Intern writes outreach and educational materials to promote the rights of LGBT and HIV-positive immigrants. The Public Policy Intern may assist with developing grassroots activists in key Congressional districts.
The Public Policy Intern can help implement the strategies based on his or her research by attending lobby meetings on capitol hill, and assisting with briefings of members of Congress and their staff.

Job Openings
Policy Associate
Position Location: Washington, DC
Immigration Equality seeks a dynamic, motivated individual with outstanding lobbying and communications skills to build support for equal immigration rights on Capitol Hill and with key stakeholders. The Policy Associate will play a major role in campaigning for passage of pro-LGBT immigration legislation.
The Policy Associate will work with the Policy Director to build support for the Uniting American Families Act (S. 424 / H.R. 1024) and the Reuniting Families Act (H.R. 2079), which will allow gays and lesbians to sponsor their foreign-born permanent partners for immigration. The Policy Associate will also advocate for passage of comprehensive immigration reform and inclusion of LGBT families in comprehensive immigration reform.
Job Responsibilities:

Meet and advocate with members of Congress and their staff to build support for equal LGBT immigration rights.

Coordinate with media and policy staff to build support for equal LGBT immigration rights in key Congressional Districts.

Write fact sheets, analyses and other materials critical to building support for the campaign.

Play a major role in planning and executing Immigration Equality's Lobby Day.

Assist with major Capitol Hill events including briefings.

Attend and lead meetings with key partner organizations to build support for the campaign.
Qualifications:
Priority will be given to candidates with prior federal lobbying experience. State lobbying experience and policy experience on immigration and/or LGBT rights a major plus.

Online Grassroots Organizer
Position Location: Washington, DC
Momentum is building in Congress for comprehensive immigration reform, and we are rolling out a focused advocacy campaign to galvanize LGBT support for comprehensive immigration reform and for inclusion of LGBT binational families in comprehensive immigration reform legislation. Immigration Equality has created a 501(c)4, the Immigration Equality Action Fund, and this new staff position will work for both entities.
The Online Grassroots Organizer will have two key responsibilities: first, to create and maintain the Action Fund’s web-based advocacy tools, and second, to manage Immigration Equality’s Spokesfamilies Bureau, and work with local advocates to maximize grassroots mobilization and impact in target Congressional districts.
Responsibilities:
I. Online Advocacy
o Develop the Action Fund’s web presence and build online advocacy tools as well as a website for the new “LGBT for CIR” campaign.
o Create a comprehensive online strategy to maximize grassroots capacity, campaign growth, and audience responsiveness.
o Develop on-line advocacy tools and grassroots organizing resources
o Develop mechanisms for tracking, reporting and sharing online results and analysis of results to relevant staff and board members.
II. Spokesfamilies Bureau and Grassroots Mobilization in Targeted Congressional Districts
o Use new and traditional media to communicate with longtime spokesfamilies for LGBT immigration rights, recruit new couples in target legislative districts, and manage the spokesfamilies database.
o Respond to inquiries from binational couples seeking opportunities to get involved.
o Drive local outreach in high-value Congressional districts. Reach out to local LGBT and immigrant rights organizations in target districts to identify potential spokesfamilies and to collaborate with local organizations in planning in-district meetings with legislators.
Qualifications:
o Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
o Significant experience in political or advocacy campaigns, particularly web-based efforts.
o Experience using and administering Internet technologies such as Convio, Capwiz, and DIA.
o A human touch in working with spokesfamilies, and a collaborative spirit in working with diverse stakeholders around the country.
o Demonstrated ability to drive projects independently and to deliver results on time and on budget.
