Home > Blog > I won asylum!

Dear friends,

I am Edafe Okporo, a gay refugee from Nigeria. I am writing this letter because I was recently granted asylum in the United States. I am so happy!

Help Immigration Equality provide legal services to more immigrants like me by making a donation today.

When I arrived in the U.S., I immediately asked immigration agents for help and for asylum at the airport. Because of this, they detained me at the Elizabeth detention center in New Jersey for over five months. While I was detained, I found out about Immigration Equality and called them for help. Immigration Equality secured a free attorney for me from the law firm Debevoise and Plimpton LLP, who represented me and helped me to win my asylum case.

As immigrants like me flee for safety, we are forced to fight against government prosecutors who are determined to deporting us back to countries where our lives are at risk. Immigration Equality takes collect calls from detention and provides free attorneys so that we do not have to fight this battle alone. And they win 99% of the time!

Help more LGBTQ and HIV positive people get asylum by donating to Immigration Equality.

Thank you for supporting me and for supporting Immigration Equality. You saved my life!

Yours Truly,
Edafe Okporo
